This was wholly enjoyable. Thanks for the tale; it was easy to feel we were along for the trek with you. And thanks for sprinkling moments of aesthetic language, like this:
I stay up to read a little, and the thunderstorm’s far edge finds and patters my tent with rain as I drift off to sleep.
And this:
Long, big sky stretches over a vast empty nothingness, and one can sense how minuscule they are between the piles of rocks split by the frozen wanderings of daydreamers.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Morph came through with really great creative language for this collaboration, so thanks from both of us for saying you appreciated it :)
Shittymorph’s mom here. Thank you for this lovely and vivid piece — on Montana and my son. Paul — you captured the high points of both, reflecting you may well be more observant than you think. Montana is ridiculously beautiful and wild, and my son — who morphed into Morph somewhere along the way — is indeed keenly observant, an amazing story teller, wary of wall devils, and most of all — he is possessed of radical integrity. You nailed it, Paul. And you brought your curious, clever, open mind to Montana — what a great collaboration you two created. I am glad you enjoyed the zucchini bread, the dogs send their love and I hope you will always remember that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 feet through an announcer’s table. #sorrynotsorry
Driving up to Montana tomorrow as my birthday is 9/20 and this was a perfectly timed find! After a motorcycle accident and a few new hips, I'm grateful I can do this too! Safe travels to you all
You did Loop-50-Flattop-Loop - what was your original 60 mile itinerary? Loop to Granite Park to Fifty in one day seems pretty grueling. You did Fifty to Flattop to Loop, 2 miles fewer, in two days.
We were definitely taking it easy! The original loop had us going north to Glenn’s Lake, south through the tunnel to Many Glacier, and then THE MORNING OF MY FLIGHT 10 miles back to Logan Pass to shuttle to the Loop- where we would have then had a 3-4 hr drive back to Missoula. That schedule was way too tight for any sort of relaxation.
Paul - you are also a person of radical integrity. Glad that you didn't scare the mama griz on your stochastic adventure. It would be great to get you out in the North Cascade next summer.

Great read, especially since I'll be heading to Kalispell/Whitefish next week.
What was the name of the BBQ restaurant in Kalispell?
The Desoto Grill! Would recommend, though it's a bit on the pricey side.

I'd love to! I never got out there during the trail and it's big on my list!
